RED RIBBON WEEK:

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, RBPD officers will be in Freshman circle and the Quad area collecting entries for a raffle of prizes. To enter the drawing, you must sign a pledge to remain drug, alcohol and tobacco free. Prizes include Beats Headphones, Airpods, Spike Ball, Giant Jenga, and Hydro Flasks. A raffle will be held daily and winners announced during the following morning announcements. Look for RBPD in freshman circle and the quad to sign the pledge and enter the drawing starting Tuesday. One entry per student. Your name will remain in the lottery until all prizes are given out.

UCLA BLOOD DRIVE:

It’s not too late to help save lives and sign up for the UCLA Blood Drive on Monday, November 5th. Check your school email for the link to sign up for an appointment time! The sooner you sign up, the more guaranteed you will be able to get an appointment to donate! Deadline to donate is this coming Monday, October 22nd.

FREE MATH TUTORING:

The Math Department is offering free math tutoring after school on Mondays through Thursdays until 4PM. Mondays in room 315; Tuesdays in room 213; Wednesdays in room 306; Thursdays in room 309

PTSA REFLECTIONS CONTEST:

Hey artists! PTSA Reflections contest themed “Heroes Around Me”  is due October 2Please stop by to pick up an application. The categories include: dance choreography, film

production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

SKECHERS PIER TO PIER FRIENDSHIP WALK:

Join us on Sunday, October 28, 2018 for the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. Bring your friends, family and neighbors with you as we walk the pier to pier loop between Manhattan Beach Pier and Hermosa Beach Pier and help us raise funds for all of our RBUSD schools. If you are not able to make it on the 28th, you can register as a “virtual walker” and we will get credit for your participation. The more registrations, the more money for RBUSD. BLOWING SMOKE: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VAPING:

With 28% of 11th graders in the Beach Cities reporting smoking electronic cigarettes or vaping in the past 30 days (according to the CA Healthy Kids Survey), vaping has quickly become a growing concern for parents, schools and health professionals alike.  Join us for a panel discussion facilitated by Dr. Nicole Wesley, Executive Director of Student Services for Redondo Beach Unified School District. Hear from a variety of panelists, including Mark Hernandez from the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, DFASAM from the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health, Dr. Moe Gelbart from the Thelma McMillen Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Claire Haddad,  Redondo Union High School Senior and BCHD Youth Advisory Council member, and Todd Schenasi, who will offer personal testimonials.

CAML:

Congratulations to Redondo’s top scoring students on the first California Math League (CAML) Contest!  Max Black scored a perfect 6, while Thunder Bird and Ben Tait were tied for second with 5 out of 6.  The next CAML Contest will be on November 13.

NEST INFO:

Seniors:  If you plan to attend El Camino College next fall, you are invited to attend an application presentation by El Camino representatives in the Nest on Tuesday, October 23rd and Wednesday, October 24th from 1-3pm. The same information will be presented on both days.

*El Camino College counselor will be visiting the Nest every Tuesday during 4th and 6th period starting October 30. Stop by the Nest to sign up and meet one on one with the El Camino counselor to discuss how to apply and sign up for classes.

RUGBY:

Rugby open field workouts will start on Tuesday, October 23rd from 3:15 – 4:30 PM on the practice field.  Anyone who is interested is welcome to join, but must be registered and have a current

physical on file with the athletic office.  Please stop in to the athletic office to pick up forms and get information with regards to the Rugby team and how to register. 

BASEBALL TRYOUTS:

Baseball tryouts will be held for ALL Freshman and those new to the program on Oct 26th,29th,and 30th at 3:30 on the varsity Baseball Field. Any questions please contact Coach Diver [email protected]

SWIM TEAM TRYOUTS:

Boys and Girls Swim Team Tryouts will be held at the end of this month. Thursday, November 1st, all

 6th period Water Polo Boys interested will try out, and 3:15 for all non-water polo boys. On Friday, November 2nd, tryouts will be held for any 5th period Water Polo Girls interested, and 3:15 all non-water polo girls. All swimmers will be evaluated on 4 timed swims.  100 free, 50 fly, 50 back, and 50 breast, and times will be compared and teams will be based on tryout times. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:

Students:  Are you looking for a great volunteer opportunity? The Friends of the Redondo Beach

Library are looking for high school students to help with their annual book sale on Saturday, Oct 27. Students are needed after school to help load books into boxes from October 22 to 26. You’ll receive a letter certifying your volunteer hours.  Sign-up in the Nest by Friday, October 19.

MUSIC LOVERS:

Jam club will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Mr.Soohoos room, room 209. Anyone with any musical experience is welcome, they will be playing every and all types of music so come on down and have a jammin' time.

PARKING AT RUHS:

Staff and Students: All parking spots are assigned and permitted. In order for you to park in the parking lot during the school day, you MUST have been assigned a designated spot. Please do not park in the parking lot if you did not receive a spot, you will be towed.

DRESS CODE:

Please remember that RUHS has a strict dress code policy that needs to be adhered to. Failure to do so will result in having to change and/or fix your outfit. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask any adult on campus, or look on the website or in your school planner for the dress code policy of what is allowable and what is not.

COMMUNITY HELPLINE:

Community Helpline is a toll-free, confidential crisis and referral hotline. They are currently accepting applications for their fall training class. BEACH CITIES PREVENTION:

The October 24, 2018 Beach Cities Prevention Community Council (PCC) meeting will be held from 10am to 12pm at the El Segundo Police Department located at 348 Main St., El Segundo, 90245. Street parking is available and the meeting will be held in a conference room adjacent to the lobby. Officers from the El Segundo Police Department will provide a presentation on vaping.
